Pupils will study this course in three Units, each of which will be examined at the first possible opportunity following its completion:
Unit 1 - June of Year 10
Unit 2 - January of Year 11
Unit 3 - June of Year 11
There are opportunities to re-take Unit 1 and 2 examinations at a later sitting for those seeking an improved mark.
In addition to the three externally-assessed units, pupils will take a Centre-Assessed Unit (CAU) which is made up of two components:
a) The ISA (Investigative Skills Assignment) - which comprises the following:
- Planning an investigation (quality of planning not assessed but aids understanding of the process)
- Designing a table to record results from the investigation (2 marks)
- Collecting results in pairs or individually (quality of results not assessed but aids analysis)
- Drawing a graph of the results (4 marks)
- Sitting a written exam under strict exam conditions in class which has two sections. Section one contains questions about the investigation they completed. Section two contains questions on
a related investigation (28 marks)
b) The PSA (Practical Skills Assessment) - which comprises the following:
- Carrying out practical work during the course with care and skill (6 marks)
Please note the total mark (out of 40) for each ISA will be marked by staff of the chemistry department and pupils will be given an indication of their mark soon afterwards. However all work is
subject to external moderation after submission and marks could change slightly. Although pupils will be given their mark, it is difficult to predict the grade boundaries as these do change each year.
We can only confirm a title of the ISA which pupils will complete and cannot give any further details on what will be in the assignment.
The CAU will be taken for the first time in Year 10 and again in Year 11 (with a different investigation!). The higher of the two marks will count towards the final GCSE grade.
