The Programmes of Study for the Sixth Form are based on the Edexcel GCE Chemistry 8CH01 (AS) and 9CH01 (A2) Specification

The Programme of Study for Chemistry in the Lower Sixth Form will be an AS level course involving three units of study :

  • Unit 1 - The Core Principles of Chemistry
  • Unit 2 - Application of Core Principles of Chemistry
  • Unit 3 - Chemistry Laboratory Skills I (internally assessed)

At the end of the Lower Sixth Form there will be externally set written papers on Units 1 and 2 with the marks obtained added to the mark from the internally assessed Unit 3 and generating a AS level grade award.

In the Upper Sixth the Programme of Study for Chemistry will be an A2 level course building upon the work already done at AS level involving the study of a further three units of study:

  • Unit 4 - General Principles of Chemistry I – Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
  • Unit 5 - General Principles of Chemistry II – Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry
  • Unit 6 - Chemistry Laboratory Skills II (internally assessed)

In January of the Upper Sixth Form most students will be entered for Unit 4 of the A2 examination. Retakes of Units 1 and 2 of the AS examination will be available for students looking to improve upon their first attempt at these Units of work. At the end of the Upper Sixth Form there will be an externally set written paper on Units 5 (and optional retakes of Units 1, 2 and 4) with the mark obtained combined with that attained at AS generating a A2 level grade award. Each level contributes 50% of the marks towards the final A2 level grade.
