The Programme of Study for year 12 is based on the Edexcel GCE AS chemistry specification

Click here for the Unit descriptions for Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3

The topics studied during the year are listed below:

1.1 Atomic structure

1.2 Formulae, equations and moles

1.3 Structure and bonding

1.4 The Periodic Table I

1.5 Introduction to oxidation and reduction

1.6 Group 1 and group 2

1.7 Group 7

2.1 Energetics I

2.2 Organic chemistry I

2.3 Kinetics I

2.4 Chemical equilibria I

2.5 Industrial inorganic chemistry

The textbooks used in Year 12 are the Nelson Advanced Science: Chemistry series which are specially written to complement the Edexcel GCE course. These are not supplied by the school but may be purchased from local bookshops or from online booksellers such as amazon.co.uk

Homework in the sixth form is less formulaic than in the lower school. Each week you are likely to have to write up at least one practical and answer some exam-type questions on the current topic. You will normally be given several days to complete each piece of work but should aim to spread out your work over the week rather than leave it all until the last minute.

There will be a test on completion of each topic, a trial Unit 1 examination in January and the actual AS examination in May/June.
